Dear Lighthouse Enthusiast:
Thank you for your interest in our volunteer lighthouse keepers program. We offer a unique opportunity for you to make a significant contribution to the preservation, restoration, and interpretation of Big Sable Point Lighthouse, the Ludington North Breakwater Light, and Little Sable Point Lighthouse.
The first step in becoming a volunteer keeper is to join Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association. A membership brochure is available here. Members will receive three newsletters per year. The summer newsletter calls for volunteer keepers for the following season.
Our volunteers must be 21 years of age or older. There are no pets allowed. Duties include cleaning, tower tours, historical interpretation, and operation of a gift shop. Applicants should make every effort to visit our lighthouses before applying to be a keeper.
During the 2010 season, Big Sable will be open May 1 through October 31 from
10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. This lighthouse is located within the Ludington State Park. Little Sable Point Lighthouse, located within Silver Lake State Park in Mears, will be open May 26 through September 30 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. The Ludington North Breakwater Lighthouse is located at the foot of Ludington Avenue in Ludington. It will be open from May 26 through September 4 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday.
Housing is provided for all volunteer lighthouse keepers, onsite at Big Sable and nearby for both Little Sable and the Ludington North Breakwater Light.
The application process for new keepers involves a written application, a resume, and two letters of reference. There will be 4-7 volunteers scheduled for each tour of duty (2 weeks at Big Sable and 1 week at Little Sable and the Ludington North Breakwater Lighthouse).
If selected, you undergo a personal interview before you are placed on the schedule. Keeper assignments will be finalized by January. If selected to become a volunteer Keeper, you will be expected to participate in an orientation/training day in April.
